Art Opens The Heart

01 Jul-06 Jul

Preview: Friday 4 July, 6 – 9pm

Christmas Steps Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Bristol-based artist Michael Hayter. Hayter`s work was derived initially from an investigation into the contents of depression - that is, the underbelly of consciousness which often appears incongruous, or having no apparent rationale. Very like the content of dreams, it is an expression of that shadow existence, which often frightens and disorientates us, but nevertheless is a real component of our psyche. It is the ‘ghost at the feast’, or the fleeting, unexpected image of violence or tenderness – acute and strong feelings.

Often the materials he uses relate to the body and its close connection with emotion and the more animalistic aspects of being human. He borrows freely from religious art and mixes this with the personal, the animal and the intellectual. Never quite able to escape our birth and our past, his work is a ‘scooping up’ of all that is human, and the reworking of it into a mythology.

Hayter studied Fine Art at London Guildhall University (Cass School) and has exhibited in London, Bristol and Bath. He is currently a studio-holder at Spike Island in Bristol.
